Noorani Qaida for Beginners: Why It Comes Before the Quran
By British Quran Academy · 1 September 2026 · 7 min read
Noorani Qaida is the short foundation book that teaches the Arabic letters, their correct sounds, and how they join into words. It exists for one reason: a reader who learns the sounds correctly once never has to unlearn them.
What the Qaida covers
- Individual letters and their articulation points.
- Joined letter forms at the start, middle and end of a word.
- Harakat — fatha, kasra and damma.
- Tanween, sukoon and shaddah.
- Madd, or the lengthening of vowels.
- Short practice words and then short verses.
Why skipping it backfires
A child who memorises Surahs by ear before learning the letters often reads with the wrong sounds for years. Fixing pronunciation later takes far longer than learning it correctly at the start, because the mouth has to be retrained as well as the eye.

In one-to-one lessons, most children finish the Qaida in three to six months at four lessons a week. Adults often finish faster, in eight to sixteen weeks, because they grasp the patterns quickly and practise independently.
How parents can help in five minutes a day
- Ask the child to read the day's line aloud to you — accuracy, not speed.
- Praise the correct sound specifically: 'that ق was perfect'.
- Keep the Qaida in one place so the lesson never starts with a search.
- Never correct pronunciation yourself if you are unsure — let the teacher do it.
Three months spent properly on the Qaida saves three years of corrections later.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does Noorani Qaida take to complete?
Most children complete it in three to six months with four one-to-one lessons a week. Adults often complete it in eight to sixteen weeks.
Can an adult start with Noorani Qaida?
Yes, and most adult beginners should. Lessons are private one-to-one, so there is no group to feel self-conscious in.
Is Noorani Qaida necessary if my child already memorised some Surahs?
Usually yes. Memorising by ear does not teach the letters, so the Qaida is what allows a child to read any page of the Quran independently and correctly.
