How to Learn Quran with Tajweed Online (Step by Step)
By British Quran Academy · 18 August 2026 · 10 min read
Tajweed is not decoration. It is the set of rules that keeps the meaning of the Quran intact — giving every letter its right sound, length and point of articulation. Learned in the right order, online, it is very achievable for both children and adults starting from scratch.
Stage 1: Letters and sounds (Noorani Qaida)
Before any rule, the twenty-eight letters must be pronounced from the correct place in the mouth and throat. This is where a one-to-one teacher is irreplaceable: the difference between ط and ت, or ح and ه, cannot be fixed by an app that cannot hear you.
Stage 2: Joining letters and short words
Harakat, sukoon, tanween and madd are introduced here. Most students spend six to twelve weeks at this stage, four days a week, and this is the stage worth not rushing.
Stage 3: The core Tajweed rules
- Makharij — the articulation points of each letter.
- Sifaat — the qualities of letters, such as heavy and light.
- Noon and Meem Mushaddad, and the rules of Ghunnah.
- Idgham, Ikhfa, Iqlab and Izhar — the rules of Noon Saakin and Tanween.
- Qalqalah, Madd lengths, and the rules of stopping (Waqf).

Rules only become recitation once they are applied without thinking. Students recite a page, the teacher marks the errors, and the same page is repeated until it is clean. Then it moves on.
Five mistakes almost every new reader makes
- Shortening a Madd because it feels slow — length is part of the word.
- Reading ع as a light vowel instead of from the throat.
- Skipping Ghunnah on Noon and Meem Mushaddad.
- Stopping mid-phrase wherever a breath runs out, which can break the meaning.
- Practising quietly. Tajweed is corrected by being heard aloud.
How long does it take?
With four one-to-one lessons a week and a few minutes of daily practice, a complete beginner commonly reads the Quran with basic Tajweed within nine to fifteen months. Fluent, polished recitation continues developing well beyond that — as it does for everyone.
Recite the Quran slowly and beautifully. Speed comes on its own; accuracy never does.
