Learning to Read the Quran as an Adult: It Is Not Too Late

By British Quran Academy · 21 September 2026 · 6 min read

A large number of Muslim adults in Britain and America can pray, fast and raise practising children, yet cannot read a page of the Quran independently. It is far more common than it feels, and it is entirely fixable.

Why adults often progress faster

  • They understand the patterns of a rule immediately when it is explained.
  • They practise without being reminded.
  • They know why they are doing it, which carries them through the slow weeks.

The starting point

Almost every adult beginner should start with Noorani Qaida — letters and sounds first. In one-to-one lessons this typically takes eight to sixteen weeks, after which reading short Surahs begins and confidence builds quickly.

Fitting it around a working week

  1. Three lessons a week of 30 minutes is enough for real progress.
  2. Book slots after Maghrib or early morning before work.
  3. Ten minutes of daily practice matters more than one long weekend session.
  4. Ask for a same-gender teacher if that makes you more comfortable.

Learning with your children

Some parents take a lesson immediately after their child's, on the same evening. It normalises learning at home and children practise harder when they can see a parent doing the same work.

The only adults who never learn to read the Quran are the ones who decided it was too late.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it too late for an adult to learn to read the Quran?

No. Adults commonly complete Noorani Qaida in eight to sixteen weeks of one-to-one lessons and go on to read the Quran with Tajweed.

Are adult Quran lessons private?

Yes, every lesson is one-to-one with a single teacher, so there is no group and no embarrassment about starting from the beginning.

Can I have a female teacher as an adult learner?

Yes. Female teachers are available for sisters, and male teachers for brothers, on request.
